| Abstract/Contents: | "Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is well adapted to transitional climatic regions of the U.S. and is one of the most wear tolerant, heat hardy, and drought resistant of the cool-season turfgrasses under tree shade. In a 10-year assessment under post oak (Quercus stellata Wang.) tree shade with adequate moisture provided, 11 of 14 cultivars produced an acceptable turf cover for lawns and roughs. This study was conducted to compare the relative wear tolerance of these 14 tall fescue genotypes during May and June, the period of prime turf quality. Turfgrass wear was imposed via a mechanical wear simulator. The wear data indicate that significant interspecies differences occurred in shoot density between wear and non-wear stressed turfs. All turfs subsequently recovered fully. Wear stress relative tolerance was from excellent to poor. This indicates that there are tall fescue cultivars with more wear tolerance than others for use on lawns and roughs in shaded sites in warm-humid climates." |
