Abstract/Contents:"When contemplating conversion to effluent irrigation on a golf course several factors must be considered. These are the effluent water quality, the design of the existing or proposed irrigation system, the storage capacity of exisiting or proposed lakes, and concerns of the membership and the public. All of these will play a major role in the degree of success or failure experienced with any effluent conversion...Any conversion to effluent must address public concerns about the use of waste water in their area. People frequently have misconceptions about effluent water. They iften think sewage is being applied, the effluent will have on unpleasant odor or will contain live "germs". Of course none of these are true but perception not fact drives public opinion. Consequently it may be necessary to educate the club membership and general public about effluent water. Implementing effluent irrigation should be done in an orderly fashion. First a feasibility study should be conducted to insure that using a particular effluent on a particular site is agronomically sound, economically justifiable, and environmentally safe. Second, the public should be educated and the proper permits obtained. And third, the system should be properly redesigned and converted by competent irrigation professionals."
