Abstract/Contents:"In summary, this analysis has shown that the composting industry has made significant progress in implementation of the Part 503 pathogen control and monitoring measures. Additional effort is needed to bring all facilities into consistent compliance with the process and microbiological requirements and ensure that all compost products are hygenically safe to use. Facility operators must follow systematic operating and monitoring practices with emphasis on producing a high quality, pathogen free compost, in order to maximize the beneficial use potential of the biosolids resource. To help minimize the regrowth of bacterial pathogens in biosolids compost, an index to needs to be developed to correlate the regrowth potential to compost stability as measured by oxygen uptake rate or some other parameter. EPA and the industry should work close together to develop such an index."
