Abstract/Contents:"Most general turf areas should be fertilized three or four times a year if a soluble (readily available) nitrogen fertilizer is used, or one that has half or less water-insoluble nitrogen (WIN). The preferred dates and rates would be: September 50 lbs N/M, October to mid November 50 to 65 lbs N/M, mid-November to January 50 to 65 lbs N/M, and late May 0 to 30 lbs N/M...If only one application can be made make it October to mid-November, if only two can be made, apply in October to mid-November and again in December-January." Advantages of a fall-winter fertilization program are: a denser turf, improved root system, fewer spring mowing problems, a much improved color in fall, winter, and early spring, better competition to weeds, the ability to overcome a drought, and fewer disease problems.
