Abstract/Contents:"Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots of grasses that developes between the layer of green vegetation and the soil surface and interferes with the best growth of the turf. The interferance with the growth phase is what distinguishes thatch from cushion. . . . Not all surface accumulation of turf is bad. It can serve to absorb shock from equipment or during use. It also has insulating value with regard to moisture and temperature." Means of controlling thatch include the following: (1) Water less frequently, which will mean fewer surface roots. (2) Use the lowest acceptable level of fertilization. (3) Mowing at higher cuts acceptable to the grass. (4) Not destroying earthworms unless necessary. (5) Encouraging the soil organisms to do their work by maintaining the proper soil pH of 6. (6) Tolerating earthworms if possible. (7) Avoid pesticides that interfere with decay organisms. (8) Use any new grass varieties that yield less thatch.
