Abstract/Contents: | The successful management of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) begins with proper establishment practices. Proper seeding date and rate are key. Proper mowing height is 2"-3". Frequency of mowing should be adjusted so as to removed no more than 30% of leaf area in any one mowing. 2-4 N lbs/1000 sq ft is recommended split between spring and fall. Too much nitrogen may increase the tendancy for winter injury. Due to its good drought resistance and deep root system, the irrigation interval can be extended especially if deep watering is practiced. Disease development may be greater under a program of higher fertility and frequent irrigation. Overseeding may also be another way of sustaining tall fescue quality over the years. Competition among tall fescue plants should provide for a finer leaf texture and a more pleasing turf appearance. Frequency of overseeding will be determined primarily by the extent of turfgrass thinning, the level of management and the appearance desired. |
