| Abstract/Contents: | 51 varieties (17 commercially available) + 10 blends of Kentucky bluegrass plus 4 mixtures had been under evaluation since 4/72 in 6'x 8' plots in 3 replications. Plots were fertilized with 4 applications of 10-6-4 to supply 4 lb N/1000 sq ft per year, and cut every 2-3 weeks at 1.5". Helminthosporium leaf spot resistance was greatest in Galaxy, Geronimo and Brunswick P-57 and P-84 (experimental). The worst were Kenblue and Park. Best visual quality: Adelphi then Sodco, Fylking and P-84. Seedheads were abundant in Baron and Victa while absent from Brunswick, Glade, Kenblue, Sydsport, and Windsor. Nugget + Park blend was good in leaf spot resistance and spring green-up. In the fine fescue tests, 19 commercial, 7 experimental and a blend were tested for visual quality on 6'x 8' plots (3 replications), fertilized twice yearly, supplying 2 lb N/1000 sq ft. The best were Scaldis and Barfalla. The worst were Highlight and Scarlet. In the perennial ryegrass trials 4 commercial and 5 experimental cultivars were rated on quality: Manhattan clearly was the best, then Pennfine. Worst by far was Common. |
