Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study is to determine the compatibility of turf type tall fescue in mixture with Kentucky bluegrass and/or perennial ryegrass under close mowing heights and simulated traffic...Initial observations in spring, 1991 showed that the perennial ryegrass blend gave excellent turf quality at both cutting heights in April and early May but was injured by disease, tentatively identified as dollarspot, in late May-early June. Quality of turf mowed high remained good in late spring but that of the 5/8 inch cutting height was only fair. Kentucky bluegrass blends mowed at 5/8 inch gave the best quality turf in late spring. The influence of irrigation on quality of blends and mixtures became apparent during summer and early fall, 1991. Best quality of the tall fescue blend occurred with the non-irrigation regime. On the other hand, quality of the Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass blends were best with irrigation. In 1992, quality differences according to blend or mixture were not as evident as in 1991...In 1993, there was a highly significant interaction, blend-mixture x cutting height, for average summer quality of irrigated and non-irrigated turf. Blends-mixtures responded differently to cutting heights...Disease incidence has been a principal influence on turfgrass quality over the past three years...In 1993, the detrimental effect of rhizoctonia on turfgrass quality was decreased by mixing susceptible tall fescue and perennial ryegrass species with Kentucky bluegrass, which is resistant rhizoctonia."
