Abstract/Contents:"Fungicides were evaluated for control of ergot in Kentucky bluegrass seed field ('Chateau') near Culver, Oregon. A second field of 'Chateau' located at the Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center (Powell Butte site) was infested with ergot at 1 sclerotia/ft₂ on 18 Dec, 1992 and 10 Feb, 1993. Punch, Folicur, and Tilt, in combination with and without Penaturf surfactant, were applied to 10 ft x 20 ft plots replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Fungicides were applied with 8004 TwinJet nozzles on a 9 ft CO² pressurized boom sprayer at 40 psi and 20 gals of water/A. LI 700 penetrant at 1 pt/100 gals and 17% oil at 1 pt/A were applied in combination with all fungicides except one 28 fl oz Punch treatment. Treatments were applied at the Culver location on 7 and 19 Jun, and at the Powell Butte site on 10 and 19 Jun. The first treatments were applied at the initiation of anthesis. One hundred panicles were collected from each plot on 6 Jul at the Culver location and 9 Jul at the Powell Butte site. Number of panicles with sclerotia per panicle, and sclerotia per plot were determined for each plot. Seed germination followed AOSA rules for testing seeds. Fields were grown following standard cultural practices for grass seed production, except exclusion of fungicides from research areas. Soils are sandy loam with a pH of 6.9. The level of ergot sclerotia was substantially higher at the Powell Butte site where ergot was distributed. Fungicides at both locations significantly reduced the total number of sclerotia/plot when compared to the non-treated control plots. Punch provided the greatest control, with exception of the Punch treatment with LI 700 and 17% oil. Double treatments of all three materials at the higher rate out performed single treatments at the same rate or double application at the lower rate. Results from double applications were the same whether the second application was a fungicide or the wetting agent, Penaturf. Folicur was the only fungicide to reduce germination, while a double application of Penaturf reduced seed weight per sample."
