| Abstract/Contents: | "These are results from a two year experiment that compared the effectiveness of three ESN fertilizers with different coating thicknesses (T60, T90 and T120). These coatings are ultra thin polymer coatings which release their nitrogen by osmosis. Each coating was tested with a variety of formulations of ESN fertilizers (100%, 80%, 60% and 40% ESN) and water soluble urea. In addition, high and low rates of each of the treatments were compared. The performance of the ultra thin polymer coatings were compared with industry standards for sulphur coated urea (SCU) and Isobutylidene diurea (IBDU). The ESN treatments compared favourabley with the control treatments. Generally, consistent colour, density and % cover ratings were achieved which suggests that the coatings and formulations were working effectively. For coating thickness, the T90 treatment produced a marginally more consistent response. In terms of formulation, the 40% ESN/60% urea treatment produced a more immediate response, but the ratings were more variable with this treatment than the formulations with a higher percentage of coated product. The T90 100% ESN treatment applied every 16 weeks produced a very consistent response and compared favourably with control treatments and other ESN treatments. These results strongly support the potential of using some of these ESN products to increase the length of time between fertilizer application." |
