Abstract/Contents:The taxonomy of F. ovina var. macrophylla was studied using statistical techniques for a number of characteristics, flavonoid composition and studies in controlled environment with controlled nutrition. It was concluded that the polymorphism was partly genetic and partly environmental. The soil Ca content had an important effect on the differences between alpine and mountain ecotypes, but soil pH or Al content might also be important. Morphological variations were controlled by multiple factors. The results tended to confirm that F. ovina var. macrophylla was an allopolyploid derived from F. dura subsp. typica and F. glauca subsp. macrophylla.
