Abstract/Contents:"Increasingly harsh conditions are found above the alpine tree line. The combination of stress factors like decreasing air pressure, rapid and extreme changes in radiation and temperature, heavy winds, short and cool summers and long, cold winters as well as short vegetation periods act as a selection filter for plant species. Native on site vegetation is adapted to these environmental conditions with many structural and functional characteristics. The regrassing of erosion zones, created either through natural occurences, or as a result of construction or grading, can only be successful, if the limits of growth in the mountains are understood. A permanent regrassing program can only be achieved by using high altitude site adapted species and not by using off site species from lower locations."
