Abstract/Contents:"Porous materials are being used increasingly in rootzones and drainage layers for sportsfields and roof gardens. Forty different types of gravel, lava, pumice, spherical and crushed expanded clays, cinders, PORIT and YTONG were tested so as to get an idea of their properties and their suitability as a plant substrate. In the first part of this paper the distribution of particle size, pH-value and frost resistance of the different materials were compared and characterised. As can be clearly seen from the results lava sands, expanded clay sands and fine particled PORIT show in this order an increasing degree of fineness (<0,06 mm). The pH-value of the expanded clays was considerably higher than that of lava and pumice and it varied from moderately to very alkaline. Ytong, PORIT, cinders as well as most of the pumice materials were not very frost resistant. The examination of the frost resistance of the materials has shown itself to be an important criterium in the evaluation of such materials as a suitable substrate for the growing of plants."
