Abstract/Contents:"The further examination of the materials concerns the water permeability, pore space, water uptake capacity and bulk density (volume weight). The results show that there are not only considerable differences between the properties of the various materials but also substantial deviations int he characteristics of materials of comparable particle size. A correlation between particle distribution and other properties is affected by the influence of internal particle porosity and bulky particle shape. The possibility of the use of crushed expanded clays in the place of lava sands, which have a higher percentage of finer particles, and less frost resistant pumice gravels is discussed. It has a high permeability, large pore space and a water uptake capacity comparable with lava and pumice, and has a higher frost resistance. Taking into account the low bulk density and the pH-value, there are advantages especially for roof gardens. The final analysis of the results shows clearly the necessity of a laboratory examination of the lasting properties of materials under field conditions."
