Abstract/Contents:"This is a report on fertilizer trials (1975-1978) to improve the vegetation cover on slopes with unfavourable conditions for growth. Fertilizaed plots always had a denser cover of vegetation and better protection against soil erosion. In one trial, the effect of complete fertilizer was lost after two years. In the other, the effect of pure nitrogen fertilizer was also quickly lost, after one yaer, but by contrast a generous application of phosphate had a lasting effect, especially in conjunction with the soil ameliorant Agrosil. In poor conditions fertilizer can cause a great change in botanical composition. If the soil becomes poor in fertility, the turf loses its density and unwanted species invade it. Festuca rubra especially responds to fertilizer; with low fertility it gives way to the less demanding Festuca ovina. Agrostis tenuis and Poa pratensis also spread when soil is fertilized."
