| Abstract/Contents: | "The application of de-icing salt in winter involves damage to plant growth and changes in soil and water analyses. To measure these effects, soil and water tests on the Gießen - Dortmund motorway were made regularly over a period of 34 months. Moreover, a field trial was made on the Turfgrass Trial Ground at Leihgestern to obtain, from a graduated set of road salt applications, information on the possible effects of excessive salt. The surface water and ground water along the motorway showed high and seasonally fluctuating salt concentrations, varying according to the weather and the amounts of salt put down. The spreading of de-icing salt led to a considerable increase in the salt content of the soil, which was correlated positively with the amount of salt applied and negatively with the distance from the carriageway. With the continual winter use of de-icing salt, an accumulation of salt in the soil may be expected, for even in a rainy year such as 1977 the salt was not completely washed out of the upper layers of the soil." |
