| Abstract/Contents: | "The application of de-icing salt keeps traffic moving in winter, but at the same time pollutes the ecosystems adjoining the highway. To learn the effects of de-icing salt on surface water, periodic checks were made, over a span of 2 1/2 years, on collecting drains and streams serving as main drainage channels along the Gießen - Dortmund and Frankfurt - Kassel motorways. In the collecting drains there were high ion concentrations, subject to seasonal variation: this applied to Ca, Mg and K as well as to Na and Cl. The inflow of salty melt-water into the streams serving as main drainage channels caused a marked increase of their salt concentration, and therefore of ion transportation. As well as the amount of salt applied, the extent of the motorway area being drained determines the salt pollution in the streams crossing the motorway zone. The contamination by de-icing salt off the surface water alongside highways is only one of the threats to running-water ecosystems, but it can be very important at certain times of the year." |
