| Abstract/Contents: | "In a series of standardized laboratory experiments the cold tolerance of various turfgrasses (cultivars of Poa pratensis, Lolium perenne and Festuca spp.) was examined in two consecutive winters, using plants taken from the field. These results, in combination with ecological tests, provided information on the separate components of winterhardiness. Cold tolerance can be regarded as a prime factor of winterhardiness in the Pannonian climatic zone and is at a maximum in December and January for all grasses. Cold tolerance is negatively correlated with temperature, but the temperature effect can often be overlaid by other factors. In this respect the growth pattern of cultivars is specially important. Differences between cultivars, which can be more marked than differences between species, are evident in the dates of the beginning and the end of hardening in the degree of cold tolerance, and in stability. The most cold-tolerant cultivars were those of Festuca ovina duriuscula and Festuc ovina. Rather less tolerant were Poa pratensis, Festuca rubra and Festuca arundinacea; the least tolerant was Lolium perenne." |
