Abstract/Contents:Article identifies sexteen essential elements for turfgrass. Highlights four elements (N, P, K, Fe) as very important elements that are generally controlled by cultural practices. Nitrogen (N) maintains vegetative growth and prevents dormancy in turfgrass. Nitrogen deficiency is more likely to occur in sands of low organic matter and under high rainfall/irrigated conditions. Phosphorus (P) is more likely to be defincient where there is poor root development. Problems may also arise if the plant is unable to distinguish between arsenic and phosphorus. Potassium (K) deficiency is most likely in extremely sandy soils under high rainfall/irrigated conditions. Potassium influences disease resistance and winter hardiness. Removal of clippings removes large amounts of potassium. Iron (Fe) is important for plant color. Hish soil pH is the most common cause of Fe deficiency. Fe availability is closely related tothe amounts of several other elements. On minor elements it is important to note tha a suspected minor element deficiency should be positively identified prior to application of any minor element fertilizers and that guesswork in minor element fertilization can lead to disaster.
