Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the opening of the Metro Compost Center (MCC), which is used for yard trimmings, and is located in Des Moines, Iowa, next to the Metro Waste Authority (MWA). There are plans to expand the already 10 acre Center, which currently processes nearly 10,000 tons of yard trimmings and wood materials annually. Seven of the ten acres are used for open air windrows that are about 350 feet long, eighteen feet wide and nine feet high. The other three acres are used as a retention basin to collect leachate and storm water run-off. A state mandated goal of a 50 percent reduction in waste by the year 2000 has caused the new project at this facility. The new project, "Mixed Waste Composting Research and Development" was begun in spring, 1996. The project includes two enclosed buildings which are going to house the aerated turned windrows, and is of relatively low cost. It uses a light tubular steel frame structure with a double polyethylene sheet covering and corrugated fiberglass walls, with two biofilters per building to control odors. This new project will cut the detention time for compost windrows by 50 percent. Both commercial and yard trimmings will be handled, and the center will be open six days a week. The project will start accepting loads from grocers in November, 1996. |
