Abstract/Contents: | In 1989, Maine passed legislation to increase recylcing to 50 percent by January, 1994, and all of the substandard landfills in the state were required to close by the end of 1992. These goals have not been met entirely, but they have affected the state dramatically. The rate of recycling in Maine has increased substantially, and the number of landfills has been steadily on the decline. Composting is also a popular way of recycling waste. There are both private agencies and regional agencies that compost. Also discussed are the various agencies and areas that compost in Maine. |
