Abstract/Contents: | The University of Maine started a composting program in 1990 using a bucket loader. In 1992, Professor Thomas Christensen converted a rotary scythe into a windrow turner which sped up the composting process. That same year, many other materials were added to the university's composting operation. In 1994, the university also started collecting municipally collected leaves. Other communities soon joined in, and less and less materials were heading to the landfills. Discusses equipment owned by the university. Since it's beginning, the cost of composting at the university has considerably declined. |
