Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted along a railroad bed in Florida to evaluate several herbicides for broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus), camphorweed (Heterotheca subaxillaris), hairy indigo (Indigofera hirsuta), and blackberry (Rubus argutis) control. Treatments included Arsenal at 0.75 and 1.0 lbs ai/A; Karmex at 5.0, 6.4, 8.0, 10.0 and 12.5 lbs ai/A; Oust at 0.1875 lbs ai/A; MSMA at 4.5 lbs ai/A: Hyvar at 6.0 and 8.0 lbs ai/A, and several combinations, thereof. All treatments included X-77 at 0.25% v/v. Treatments were replicated three times in a random complete block design. Plot size was 10 ft x 25 ft. Treatments were applied on 09 May 94 with a ² backpack sprayer set to deliver 30 gallons per acre. Plots were evaluated 90 and 180 days after treatment (DAT). Evaluations were based on percent visual control. At 90 DAT, >89% camphorweed control was achieved with Arsenal + Karnex ( 0.75 + 5.0, 8.0, 10.0; 1.0 + 5.0, 10.0), MSMA + Karmex + Oust (4.5 + 6.4 + 0.1875), MSMA + Karmex + Hyvar(4.5 + 6.4 + 6.0), and Hyvar + Karmex (8.0 + 8.0). Fair (70-79%) control was achieved with Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 12.5); while, <70% control resulted from Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 10.0) and Krovar (12.0). At 180 DAT, camphorweed ratings were canceled due to insufficient late-season stand. At 90 DAT, >89% hairy indigo control was achieved with Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 12.5; 1.0 + 10.0), MSMA + Karmex + Oust (4.5 + 6.4 + 0.1875), MSMA + Karmex + Hyvar (4.5 + 6.4 = 6.0), and Hyvar + Karmex (8.0 +8.0). Good (80-89%) control was achieved with Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 8.0; 1.0 + 5.0); while, <70% control resulted from Arsenal + Karmex ( 0.75 + 5.0, 10.0) and Krovar (12.0). At ratings 180 DAT, 80 to 89% control followed Hyvar + Karmex (8.0 + 8.0); 70 to 79% control with Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 12.5) and MSMA + Karmex + Hyvar ( 4.5 + 6.4 + 6.0); and, <70% control resulted from the remaining treatments. Fair (70-79%) blackberry control was achieved with Arsenal + Karmex (1.0 + 10.0), MSMA + Karmex + Oust (4.5 + 6.4 + 0.1875), MSMA + Karmex + Hyvar (4.5 + 6.4 + 6.0), and Hyvar + Karmex ( 8.0 + 8.0); while <70% control resulted from Arsenal + Karmex (0.75 + 5.0, 8.0 12.5; 1.0 + 5.0) and Krovar (12.0). All treatments yielded <70% control at 180 DAT. Good (80-89%) broomsedge control at 90 DAT was achieved with MSMA + Karmex + Oust (4.5 + 6.4 + 0.1875), MSMA + Karmex + Hyvar ( 4.5 + 6.4 + 6.0), and Hyvar + Karmex (8.0 + 8.0) All remaining treatments yielded <70% control. At 180 DAT ratings, only Hyvar + Karmex ( 8.0 + 8.0) achieved >89% control. All remaining treatments provided <70% control. Best treatments for total vegetation control along railroads were tank mixtures containing MSMA, Karmex, and Hyvar. One observation was no off target site movement of any treatments. Future research includes repeating 1994 study using various rates and tank mixtures of Hyvar + Karmex and possible looking at various additives or surfactants for increased control."
