Abstract/Contents:"A field study was conducted to assess plant growth regulator (PGR's) effects on turfgrass color, seedhead suppression, density, and height. Research was conducted on an established 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) turf in Newberry, Florida. The area was mowed at 10 cm 1-h prior to PGR application. The study consisted of ⁻² plots arranged in a RCBD, with 6 replicates and 14 treatments. Treatments consisted of single, sequential, and tank mixed applications. Single treatments were: AC 263,222 2.0 SC, at 0.0009, 0.017, 0.035, 0.052, 0.07, 0.14 kg ai/ha; imazaquin 1.5 SC at 0.42 kg ai/ha; imazethapyr + imazapyr 2.0 SC at 0.42 kg ai/ha; and sulfometuron at 0.09 kg ai/ha. Sequential treatments included: AC 263,222 2.0 SC at 0.017 + 0.017 kg ai/ha 4 weeks after initial (WAI). Tank mixed materials applied once included: AC 263,222 2.0 SC at 0.07 + imazapyr at 0.035 kg ai/ha; AC 263,222 2.0 SC at 0.035 + glyphosate 4.0 SC at 0.28 kg ai/ha; and glyphosate 4.0 SC at 0.28 +2, 4-D amine at 0.28 kg ai/ha, and an untreated. Induce 90 SC surfactant at 0.25% v/v was mixed with appropiate growth regulators. PGR's were applied with a ² back-pack sprayer calibrated at 187 L/ha. Data collected included: color rated on a 1-10 scale, where 10=best and 5.0=minimally acceptable; seedhead counts (#⁻²); turfgrass height (cm); and bahiagrass density where 100%=complete cover and 0%=total death. Data was collected every three weeks for 15 weeks and subjected to statistical analysis. Unacceptable turf color 3 WAI was observed for AC 263,222 at 0.14 kg ai/ha; imazethapyr + imazapyr, sulfometuron, AC 263,222 + glyphosate, and glyphosate + 2,4-D amine. Remaining treatments had marginal turf color. At 6 WAI, AC 263,222 at 0.009, 0.017, 0.035, 0.017 + 0.017 kg ai/ha; imazaquin, and sulfometuron had acceptable turf color. By 9 WAI, all treatments had acceptable turf color except AC 263,222 at 0.14 kg ai/ha and AC 263,222 + imazapyr. All treatments provided 100% seedhead suppression throughout the duration of this study. Bahiagrass density 9 WAI was 100% for AC 263,222 at 0.009 and 0.017 kg ai/ha and imazaquin at 0.42 kg ai/ha. Density ranged from 60% to 90% for AC 263,222 at 0.07, 0.035, 0.052, 0.017 + 0.017 kg ai/ha; sulfometuron, and AC 263,222 + glyphosate treatments. A 35% density was observed for AC 263,222 at 0.14 kg ai/ha and AC 263,222 + imazapyr. Plant height at 9 WAI was reduced 50% to 75% by AC 263,222 at 0.035, 0.52 0.07, 0.14 and 0.017 + 0.017 kg ai/ha; imazethapyr + imazapyr; AC 263,222 + imazapyr, and glyphosate +2,4-D amine, compared to the untreated. Remaining treatments reduced plant height & 40%. Overall, AC 263,222 at 0.0009 - 0.035 and 0.017 + 0.017 kg ai/ha, imazaquin and sulfometuron, provided the best seedhead suppression and height reduction without significant loses in density and turf color 9 WAI."
