Abstract/Contents:"The playing characteristics of a number of artificial turf bowls surfaces in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia were measured. Green speeds, corresponding to the time taken for a bowl to travel from the bowler's hand to a jack 30 yards (27.4 m) away, ranged from 11.3 s to 18.5 s. Values of maximum draw were closely related to green speed and ranged from 0.54 m to 240 m when averaged between left hand and right hand draw. Most of the surfaces gave relatively consistent draw for both right hand and left hand projections but in a few cases major discrepancies were recorded. Friction measurements based on the rotational movement of a rubber sole and linear movement of a bowls jack were highly correlated. Shoe/surface friction ranged from 0.44 to 0.88 and ball/surface friction from 0.18 to 0.57. In the United Kingdom, cushioning measured as the deceleration of a 0.5 kg test mass released from 0.55 m ranged from 201 gravities to 396 gravities but in Australia, where some surfaces had a sand/cement composite base and no shock pad, values up to 950 gravities were recorded. Performance requirements for artificial turf bowls surfaces are discussed."
