Abstract/Contents:"Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. 'Kentucky 31') was subjected to 3 compaction treatments with 2 nitrogen levels. Increasing compaction increased bulk density, water retention and soil strength while aeration porosity decreased. Visual quality, clipping yield, N use per unit soil area, and root growth declined as compaction increased. Compaction reduced percent N recovery by 10 to 31% compared to uncompacted plots. Visual quality, clipping yield, percent N in leaf tissue, and N uptake increased with increasing N-rates but percent N recovery declined. Total nonstructural carbohydrates were unaffected. The high N-rate with compaction had a detrimental effect on root growth."
