Abstract/Contents:"Black layer can form if soil redox potential is low. The objective of this lab study was to determine if NO₃⁻ retards reduction of soil when applied at levels suitable for turf. The effect of NO₃⁻ on redox potential as pe + pH and on acid-soluble sulfide (AS²⁻) content was measured on each of 19 consecutive days. Treating soil taken from a creeping bentgrass ( Agrostis stolonifera subsp. stolonifera L. var. Penncross) putting green with 52 kg N ha ⁻¹ from Ca(NO₃)₂.4H₂O buffered pe + PH began to fall past that point 7-8 d later AS²⁻ began to accrue at 0.54 mg S²⁻ kg⁻¹ soil d ⁻¹. The pe + pH of soil absent of added NO₃⁻ became poised at 7.2 by day 3, and by day 5 AS²⁻ began to accrue at 2.67 mg S²⁻ kg ⁻¹. Because NO₃⁻ prevented accrual of AS²⁻ by retarding reduction of soil it may be an effective insitu control for black layer."
