Abstract/Contents:Discusses factors which make turfgrasses important to the lives of modern Americans. Reports findings from a study which found that "the number one desire of most Americans was to be surrounded by green grass and trees." Cites and expounds upon the contributions of turfgrass to modern society. Such contributions include: prevention of erosion and maintenance of visibility along roadsides; reduction of dust, glare and surface temperatures on lawns; beautification of surroundings; and the provision of playing surfaces for recreation. Briefly reviews several new cultivars of bermudagrass and zoysiagrass and shares their intended uses.
