Abstract/Contents:"Multi-colored meadows have become of increased importance in public greens, landscape planning and private gardens. The new establishment of a graden with herbs (syn. meadow with flowers) by sowing and its permanent maintenance require the consideration of a number of factors, such as: soil (correlations between nutrients, water, air, and pH vaule), seed (origin, purity of seed, perserverance, impurities), sowing (preparation of seed bed, time, depth), seed mixture (suitability of varieties, variety composition), seed quantity and mixture components (proportion: grasses, herbs, legumes), foreign varieties (contact vegetation, seed potential of the soil), management of plant population (frequency of clipping, time). The composition of the mixture to be sown should be determined by the plant population of "natural meadows" and by the site. Field and ornamental herbs present themselves multi-colored only during the first year have, however, disappeared in the following year. If the seed of wild herbs is to be used, a low germinative capacity of some varieties must be taken into account as biologically natural characteristics. Poor populations of low growth but rich in herbs can be permanently established when considering the above facts but only on specific sites which are poor in nutrients."
