Abstract/Contents:The effects on plant growth of different soil moisture levels over 4 years were determined for landscaped areas either grassed-down or planted with Potentilla fruticosa, the Chaenomeles hybrid cv. Nicoline, the rose cv. Kathe Duvigneau and Ribes alpinum in separate plots. The available moisture was related to soil profiles and precipitation, test sites being constructed to provide sandy, loamy and mixed soils of various depths. Data are presented on shrub development and turf composition (both of grasses and invading weed species). Dry conditions affected P. fruticosa and (particularly R. alpinum more adversely than the other shrubs. Regardless of soil conditions red fescue (Festuca rubra) eventually dominated in the turf plots, which originally were sown with a mixture predominating in ryegrass (Lolium perenne).
