Abstract/Contents:Discusses the black turfgrass ataenius (BTA), Ataenius spretulus, an insect native to North America and known in 23 states for causing damage to turfgrass. Details the BTA's damage to courses in the lower desert region of California. Describes the physical characteristics of the egg, larval and mature stages of the insect. Comments on temperatures, grass types and moisture-related conditions which are conducive to BTA infestation.
