| Abstract/Contents: | "I believe my recollection can be confirmed of another former golf course on a landfill in the borough of Queens in New York City ("From the Ashes," March/April). In southern Queens County on the shores of the Jamaica Bay there existed in the late 1920s or early 1930s Floyd Bennett, a U. S. Navy installation. Across a narrow inlet of the bay was what is now referred to as landfill, although that wasn't the terminology in those days. This property was developed into a golf course named Idylwild, which existed for a number of years. The course was open to the public. It was flat, treeless and definitely not a gem, but it served its purpose, offering the opportunity to play at a low fee. In that era Queens County was a veritable golf center. There were six or more excellent private courses and an equal number of public courses. Unfortunately, the city grew and swallowed the majority of these layouts in favor of square miles of apartment buildings, highways and shopping malls." |
