Abstract/Contents:"Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was examined as a possible alternative to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis for ergovaline in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreber). Tall fescue samples were collected from field plots in Missouri and analyzed by NIR spectroscopy and HPLC. Spectral prediction equations produced coefficients of determination for calibration and cross validation of 0.93 and 0.88, respectively. The mean was 225 μg kg⁻1 dry matter (DM), and the standard errors for calibration and cross validation were 35 and 44 μg kg⁻1 DM, repectively. A close examination of NIR spectra revealed several wavelengths consistently correlated with ergovaline concentration in tall fescue."
