Abstract/Contents:"Net photosynthesis rates on a leaf area and weight basis of tall fescue increased significantly with ploidy in a 4x, 6x, 8x and lOx allopolyploid series. Total soluble protein increased with ploidy but the increase was not significant. Rocket immunoelectrophoresis was used to quantitate RuBP carboxylase protein. RuBP carboxylase concentration and percentage of total soluble protein increased significantly with ploidy. The range of RuBP carboxylase content was from 16 to 73% of total soluble protein and 2.8 to 6.5 mg/ml. Polyploidization appeared to selectively increase the allocation of total soluble protein for RuBP carboxylase synthesis. RuBP carboxylase specific activity increased with ploidy, however, the increase was not significant. RuBP carboxylase is extracqd at various levels of activation and must be activated by Mg2+ and HCO3 to measure maximal activities. Chlorophyll concentration increased as a function of ploidy, the mean for 8x genotypes exhibiting maximal chlorophyll content. Evidence presented shows that increased levels of RuBP carboxylase are associated with higher net photosynthesis rates in tall fescue. This suggests that RuBP carboxylase may represent a marker for increased net photosynthesis."
