| Abstract/Contents: | "Ormond Bermudagrass turf (Cynodon dactylon) grown on a golf course in Gainesville and parasitized by several plant nematodes (mainly Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Helicotylenchus dihystera and Paratrichodorus christiei) was treated in April 1982 with two proprietary nematicides and with two seaweed extracts. Nematode counts and grass clipping weights were obtained 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after treatment. Plot appearance was rated immediately before concluding the test. Root tensile strength was measured after the 6-month sampling. The nematicides, aldoxycarb (Standac®) and isazophos (Triumph®), were significantly superior to the seaweed extract treatment in reducing nematode populations, promoting grass growth, and improving root tensile strength. Isazophos with an acute oral LD50 of 60 mg per kg of weight of rats, is appreciably safer than most chemicals currently used for commercial turf nematode control." |
