Abstract/Contents:Changes in population density and distribution of stubble plants were studied in swards of perennial ryegrass, timothy, tall fescue and red top which received 3 rates of fertilizer and were cut 3 or 5 times/yr. Population density declined faster in the 1st yr than in the 2nd in all swards. The decreases were greater at high fertilizer rates and with less frequent cutting. Population density declined more in tall fescue and perennial ryegrass than in timothy and red top. Individual plant wt. was greater in swards with a higher rate of decrease in plant population. Plant wt. was related to population density at each cut in all spp. and treatments. There was high correlation between the diam. of a stubble plant and its distance from neighbouring plants, indicating that competition between individual plants had exerted a marked influence on changes in population density.
