Abstract/Contents:"Among the 60 species in the genus Digitaria, thirteen weedy species infest the United States, with large (Digitaria sanguinalis) and smooth (Digitaria ischaemum) crabgrass being the most common. Despite the availability of effective herbicides, these species have continued to be troublesome in most cropping systems. While many studies have been done on crabgrass control associated with herbicide treatments, little information is available on the biology and ecology of crabgrass. In order to control crabgrass more efficiently, it is necessary to understand the ecoogical factors which contribute to crabgrass adaptation and infestation. The objectives of this study were to document crabgrass distribution geographically; and its adaptation and infestation among cropping systems in the United States. The results of this survey could be of importance not only in understanding crabgrass biology and ecology but in improving management strategies." Includes the results of this experiment and further discussion.
