Abstract/Contents:"The Chicago Botanic Garden is a 385-acre living museum owned by the Forest Presere District of Cook County and managed by the Chicago Horticultural Society. It is also an important player in worldwide seed exchange as an active participant in the Index Seminum program... Each spring, the CBG publishes a list of almost 100 native plants. Just as gardening neighbors might exchange seeds to acquire new varieties, botanic gardens and arboreta exhange seeds to augment their holdings. One difference, however, is that the seeds in the program are not available commercially. According to Galen Gates, director of plant collections at the CBG, the purpose of the seed exchange is to provide scientific organizations with sources for seed that they might not otherwise be able to obtain."
