Abstract/Contents:"The larvae of scarab beetles (Japanese beetle, European chafer, and Oriental beetle) feed on turf below the soil surface and when these insects are abundant, management action must be taken to avert damage. Deciding whether or not to apply an insecticide is not simple though because these insects can not be seen without digging in the soil nor are they evenly spaced throughout a turf planting. Nonetheless, it behooves turf managers to assess the abundance of these pests and to make treatment decisions based upon these assessments." Temporal and spatial patterns of Japanese beetle larvae were studied on golf course fairways to answer the following questions: 1) How does sample size influence the precision of estimated spatial patterns of grub abundance? 2) Do spatial patterns of grub abundance recur from year to year? 3) Are spatial patterns of larval abundance related to adult abundance? "We found that precise maps of grub abundance could be obtained using a sample grid of 15 by 5 yards, that some areas do appear to have recurrent grub problems and some areas appear to consistently have low grub populations. Part of the explanation to recurrent patterns of grub abundance lies in our answer to question 3; spatial patterns of larval abundance are related to adult abundance." Lists data collection gatherings, data analysis, and results.
