Abstract/Contents: | "The Eugene (Oregon) school district's current integrated pest management (IPM) policy, in place since 1984, has been a nationally-reconized model. Under its guidelines, the district is allowed to use pesticides on a site-by-site basis only if it can show that a safety hazard exists, or that... there are no feasible pest control alternatives. The policy explicitly forbids the use of pesticides for solely aesthetic purposes. In proposed changes to the policy, the district sought greater discretion to use chemicals on turf, in shrub beds, on tracks, and in pavement cracks in playgrounds, parking lots, and sidewalks." Discusses the opposition to these proposed changes and the reasoning behind the opposition. |
