Abstract/Contents:"The southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis, remains an important nuisance in St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum, Florida's most extensive turfgrass. St. Augustinegrass' genetic resistance to the chinch bug is the most well documented case of resistance of any turfgrass to any pest. While we still do not know the mechanism or resistance, we can use it to develop and deploy improved varieties...The chinch bug has an old history of association with grass, and remains one of the major vulnerabilities of St. Augustinegrass (Busey, 1995b). In 1785, the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus, threatened to destroy the entire North Carolina grain crop, and in 1864 the species caused $100 million damage in the Mississippi Valley. The world's first biological control experiment station was established in 1888 by the Kansas legislature to produce large quantities of the chinch-bug pathogenic fungus, Beauveria sp., and 50,000 packages of fungus were distributed to farmers (references in Busey and Coy, 1988)."
