Abstract/Contents:[Entire text] "Drainage problems are faced daily by golf course superintendents who manage everything from the oldest golf courses to those that are new constructions. More specifically, some superintendents must deal with old, push-up greens that not only don't drain, but now receive excessive play from golfers who demand perfect, fast-putting surfaces all season. Options for draining putting greens are limited. Deep-tine aerification helps excess water move downward through the root zone, but leaves it no excape from there. Installation of tile lines or french-type drains has been met with very limited success. Sand-channel drainage is a fool-proof drainage system that can be installed one day and played on the next. Surface water drains by capillary action; excess water does not flow off the surface, it is pulled down through the sand channels, and eventually exits through a series of 1-inch tubes that feed into storm drains. Surplus water collects in the sand channels which act as holding cells from which the water is absorbed by the soil as needed. The time of installation is also an excellent opportunity for the superintendent to solve some other problems, such as root zone modification, re-grassing the putting surface, bunker changes, and so on. Sand-channel drainage offers the superintendent the ability to manage water more effectively." "Sand-channel drainage is a fool-proof drainage system that can be installed in one day and played on the next."
