Abstract/Contents:Discusses the troublesome winter annual weed, annual bluegrass (Poa annua) and its recent increase to epidemic proportions in the Carolinas. Describes the biology of Poa and five management practices that encourage Poa growth. Discusses various control options for Poa in bermudagrass including using selective and non-selective herbicides and plant growth retardants. "Poa annua continues to be the worst winter annual grass weed in fine turf. Poa is like the cockroach of the insect world where no matter what man tries to prevent or control it, it can adapt and survive. Poa has such a diverse composition of biotypes that complete control is not usually attainable. Additional research on the various biotypes and the effects of total management programs are needed to better pinpoint the best control options."
