| Abstract/Contents: | Building the Mount Fairweather Golf Course with no drawings on paper, Morgan DeBoer created a 9-hole golf course in southeastern Alaska on his own land, much like Kevin Costner built a baseball field in the movie 'Field of Dreams.' Having to deal with corporations wanting to buy his land and turn it into condominiums is nothing new for DeBoer, who has refused many offers in the past. Building a golf course 60 miles west of Juneau will make DeBoer's business dependent on tourists. An advantage DeBoer has is that Alaska has 20 to 22 hours of sunlight daily much of the time throughout the summer , making his business that much more able to make a profit. DeBoer was able to make the Mount Fairweather Golf Course a reality with these three key steps: (1) Did virtually no earth-moving, (2) Received sufficient amount of free topsoil from paving company working at local airport and on town roadways, and (3) Used no professional expertise in design or construction. |
