Abstract/Contents: | "A 6-year study of cutting height and nitrogen fertility responses of Paspalum vaginatum Sv. cv. Adalayd was conducted at Texas A&M from 1985 to 1990. The root zone was a sand-modified fine sandy clay. The plot size was 1.8 x 1.5 m, with 3 replications. Cutting heights of 13, 25, 40, and 55 mm and nitrogen rates of 13, 25, 60, and 75 kg N 100 m2 per growing month were imposed in all possible combinations. P & K were applied based on an annual soil test. Irrigation was applied as needed to prevent visual wilt. No disease or insect damage was noted. Visual turf quality was assessed biweekly. Shoot density, weed encroachment, fall color retention, and spring greenup were assessed annually. In each assessment year, the 13 mm cutting height produced turf acceptable for sports field and golf fairway use. As the height of cut was raised the visual turfgrass quality and shoot density decreased. As the N level decreased, the turf quality and shoot density also decreased. Cutting height had more influence on turf quality than N fertility level. Fall color retention, spring greenup, and weed encroachment responded similarily to turf quality and density." |
