| Abstract/Contents: | These characters were evaluated in 8 varieties of Italian and 2 of Westerwolds ryegrass in 3 successive years. There were diploids and tetraploids in both groups. The data recorded are presented in tables, and also data on L. perenne and L. hybridum compiled from published and unpublished sources. Seeds of L. multiflorum could be distinguished from those of L. perenne, after germination, on the basis of root fluorescence assessed by Gentner's method. Data on 1000-seed weight, anthocyanin pigmentation of the coleoptile and an index of spikelet and caryopsis dimensions served as supplementary characters in distinguishing between L. multiflorum cultivars. Various seed characters provided statistically significant distinctions between Italian and Westerwolds ryegrass and between diploid and tetraploid cultivars on 3-year averages, but not in single years. |
