Abstract/Contents:Data are given in graph form of the stability of balanced or dominance mixtures of 3, 5 or 9 species (white clover, perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy, tall fescue, birdsfoot trefoil, red clover, red fescue and Poa pratensis) growth in 2 contrasting environments; productivity was different but the stabilities of the mixtures were very similar. Experiments in progress on pure stands and binary mixtures of Agrostis tenuis, Poa pratensis, red fescue, perennial ryegrass and white clover are discussed; as the number of species increased with time the swards tended to express stabilities approaching that of the mean. It is argued that diversity is at a maximum in an oligotrophic environment.
