Abstract/Contents: | "An exotic genotype of tall fescue has been found which exhibits a net photosynthesis rate or net carbon exchange (NCE) rate 50-100% higher than typical tall fescue. Preliminary field studies of this exotic genotype gave NCE rates of 33-40 mg CO2 fixed/dm2/hr where as 10 typcial genotypes of tall fescue gave an average NCE rate of 21 mg CO2 fixed/dm2/hr. This exotic genotype was found to Rave an increased ploidy level. The photorespiration level of the exotic genotype was similar (ca. 33%) to that of the tall fescue with a normal ploidy level. Initial studies also indicate a higher carbon sink capacity for the exotic genotype. RuDP carboxylase activity is higher for the exotic genotype than for the typical genotypes both on a total amount basis and on a specific activity basis. The carboxylases and RuDP oxygenase activities will be discussed with regard to the increased chromosome level." |
