Abstract/Contents:Presents the results of a study investigating the effects of physical characteristics of sand on soil strength of sand-based golf greens. Dryer, more compacted sands were found to have greater shear resistance than moist, less compacted sands. Less uniform sands and sands with smaller average particle sizes were found to have greater bearing capacity than more uniform, larger sands. It is emphasized that all the sands tested were within USGA specifications, and that attention should therefore be given to sand characteristics even within the boundaries of the USGA green construction method.
