Abstract/Contents:"Fungicides were evaluated for efficacy against naturally occurring brown patch and dollar spot and for effects on turf quality at Lost Springs and Prairie Creek golf courses in Rogers, AR. At Lost Springs the green (12th hole) was established in 1992 with a blend of varieties SR 1019 and SR 1020 and mowed daily at 0.16 inch. At Prairie Creek, the practice green was established about 1976 with Penncross, over-seeded several times with SR 1020, and mowed at 0.19 inch on alternate days. Except for fungicide applications, all management practices were the same as for other greens at each course. The experimental design at each location was a randomized complete block with four replications. Treatments were the same at both locations except that two additional treatments were included at Prairie Creek to evaluate the effects of adding Koban in the first application. Treatments were applied on 14-, 21- or 28-day schedules beginning 17 May and ending 26 Jul for a total of 6, 4 or 3 applications, respectively. Treatments were applied in 4 gal/1000 sq ft using a hand-held CO₂-powered sprayer at 20 psi with a TEE-jet 800 2VS spray tip. Individual plots were 5 ft x 4 ft and isolated with a spray shield during application. Plots were rated visually on several dates for percentage of the plot are affected by diseases and for turf quality. Brown patch first became evident on 10 Jul at Lost Spings and 16 July at Prairie Creek. At Lost Springs, disease pressure was high, and only treatments that included a sterol inhibitor (Eagle or Sentinel) had acceptable disease control and turf quality. Ball marks were less noticeable in plots with less severe brown patch, and this effect was factored into the turf quality assessment. On 3 Aug, brown patch severity was higher and turf quality was lower than on previous dates because plots were rated one day after a 3-day junior's tournament in which the cup was within the experimental area. At Prairie Creek, disease pressure was relatively light, and all treatments except Fluazinam gave acceptable brown patch control. Heritage had no effect on dollar spot which developed at low levels in some treatments. Treatments that included a sterol inhibitor tended to have higher quality ratings than other treatments. An early-season Koban application did not appear to have any significant effects; however, Pythium was not a problem during the experiment, and the Koban treatments received fewer fungicide applications for brown patch than other treatments. Eagle and Sentinel caused the turf at both locations to be darker green than did the other treatments (data not shown). At Prairie Creek, these sterol inhibitors caused the turf to have a coarse appearance, and Rizolex caused a brownish color because approximately 10% of the leaves had necrotic tips. Excessive application of sterol inhibitors and Rizolex may affect Penncross more than SR 1020 and SR 1019, but other factors also may have been involved. The mixture of Daconil Zn + Aliette flocculated and plugged the sprayer; therefore, each fungicide was applied separately to the same plots."
